Communications and Media Questions and Answers

Question 1

One of the key elements of ineffective communication is the ability to fill all six needs, which Maslow describes as a hierarchy. The first need on this hierarchy is physiological; it involves our basic survival needs, including hunger, thirst, and sleep. This can be demonstrated through my experience of working with a volunteer agency that provides meals for individuals in need. The volunteers at this agency are committed to providing nutritious food to those who need it, and that dedication is conveyed in the way they interact with the individuals who receive the meals. They listen to their concerns about the meal or other aspects of their lives and respond openly and empathetically.

The second need is safety, which includes feelings of stability, security, and freedom from fear. This can be demonstrated through my experience working in a nonprofit organization that works with homeless individuals or is at risk of becoming homeless. The staff members at this organization strive to provide the necessary support for clients to regain their sense of safety and stability. They do so by listening to them, trying to understand the challenges they face, and providing guidance on dealing with those obstacles. This helps clients feel safe and secure knowing that someone is there to support them through difficult times.

In addition to the physiological and safety needs, Maslow identifies five additional needs on his hierarchy: love/belongingness, esteem, self-actualization, and the need for interaction in a socially diverse world. The last two needs are often considered the most important, as they involve our personal growth and development.

Self-actualization is the need to fulfill our potential and reach our highest level of achievement. This can be seen in my experience working with a group of students who are preparing for their college entrance exams. The students are motivated to do their best and reach their full potential, and they appreciate the guidance and support of the tutors who are helping them prepare for the exams. The tutors listen to the students, answer their questions, and give them feedback that is tailored to their individual needs. This helps the students feel that they are being supported and guided to reach their full potential.

Lastly, the need for interaction in a socially diverse world is about learning to interact effectively with people from different backgrounds. This can be seen in my experience tutoring adult immigrants as part of an ESL program at a community center. The tutors work hard to help their students feel comfortable and confident in interacting with diverse groups of people. They encourage them to participate in social events where they can practice their communication skills. As a result, the tutors are helping their students develop a sense of belonging and acceptance within their new communities.

Overall, my experiences demonstrate how competent communication can fill all six needs on Maslow's hierarchy. In each case, the communicators were able to listen to the needs of the individuals they were communicating with and respond in a supportive and helpful way. This demonstrates the importance of taking into account the needs of others when communicating, as it can make a big difference in the effectiveness of the communication.

Question 2

Many famous individuals seem to be highly competent communicators. Some of the most well-known examples include politicians such as Barack Obama and Abraham Lincoln, public figures like Oprah Winfrey and Taylor Swift, and business leaders like Steve Jobs and Elon Musk. One of the key skills that make these individuals seem competent is speaking and interacting with confidence. This can be considered a key element of persuasion and influence, two essential elements for effective communication.

While some people may be born with a natural talent for communicating effectively, I believe that competence can be taught and learned through deliberate practice. For example, we can learn from the successes and failures of others, and we can also engage in a variety of media literacy activities like reading articles on communication skills or watching videos of public speakers to learn new techniques.

At the same time, there are some gender differences in communication competence. For example, some studies have found that women may be more naturally skilled at communicating non-verbally than men. In contrast, men may be better at using verbal communication to assert dominance and authority. However, these differences are not set in stone, and individuals of any gender can learn to communicate effectively.

Finally, it's important to note that communication competence is defined and perceived differently in different cultures. For example, in some cultures, effective communicators are often seen as charismatic and powerful, while in others, they may be viewed as aggressive or domineering. Understanding these cultural differences is essential for effective cross-cultural communication, so it's important to familiarize ourselves with them when we interact with people from other backgrounds. Overall, I believe that communication competence is a complex and multifaceted skill that can be developed through deliberate practice, regardless of gender or cultural background.
