Question

POL 101 World Politics

Homework #2

1) Create YOUR OWN ranking (from 1 to 17) of the UN sustainable development goals (SDGs) based on your own personal perception of their importance.

(To learn about UN SDGs, please refer to the following; https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sustainable_Development_Goals)

In a few sentences, answer the following questions:

· What kind of reasoning did you use to rank the goals?

· What were you thinking about when you ranked some goals above others?

 2) For the TOP 3 of your goals, elaborate why, IN YOUR OPINION, these specific goals are relatively more important than others.

Support to your opinion with three news stories (3 total; 1 per goal) published in 2022.

(To find relevant news stories, I recommend using the Search bar in https://news.google.com/)

For the 3 news stories, you need to cite the references in the following manner:

· Make sure to cite your references by providing the Title, Date, and URL.

· For each story, write: a couple of sentences, IN YOUR OWN WORDS, summarizing the story. DO NOT copy and paste any text.

Example of Reference:

Title: Boris Johnson’s plan to restart China trade talks angers MPs

Date: Feb 10, 2022

URL: https://www.politico.eu/article/boris-johnson-uk-china-trade-economy/

Summary: The story is about Boris Johnson pushing for a closer trade relationship with China. This initiative may be facing opposition from members of the Parliament because of China's human rights problems and general security considerations.

 3) Briefly answer the following questions: In your opinion, do you think your TOP 3 goals are likely to be achieved? And why?

Solution

World Politics: Sustainable Development Goals

The following are the sustainable development goals as listed by the United Nations:

  1. No poverty
  2.  Zero hunger
  3.  Good health and wellbeing
  4. Quality education
  5.  Gender equality
  6. Clean water and sanitation
  7.  Affordable clean energy
  8. Decent work and economic growth
  9.  Industry innovation and infrastructure
  10. Reduced inequalities
  11.  Sustainable cities and communities
  12. Responsible consumption and production
  13. Climate action
  14. Life below water
  15. Life on land
  16. Peace, justice, and strong institutions
  17. Partnership for the goals/

According to my analysis and evaluations, the priorities of the SDGs should be as follows:

  1. No poverty
  2. Decent work and economic growth
  3. Responses to consumption and production
  4. Zero hunger
  5. Climate action
  6. Affordable and clean energy
  7. Quality education
  8. Good health and well being
  9. Reduced inequalities
  10. Gender equality
  11. Clean water and sanitation
  12. Industry innovation and infrastructure
  13. Sustainable cities and communities
  14. Life on land
  15. Life below water
  16. Peace, justice, and strong institutions
  17. Partnerships for the goals

Therefore, my first three goals would be eradicating poverty, enhancing decent work and economic growth, and ensuring responsible consumption and production. In analyzing the goals, I was looking for the best way to get rid of human misery. I sought to seek the easiest route to prosperity for all.

The three primary goals are so core, in my opinion, because they lay the foundation for all the rest. Eradication of poverty, the most dehumanizing factor to humanity, would facilitate people to afford primary livelihood for their own. Checks on economic growth and work will give people the muscle to cultivate and enhance personal and the community.

Title: Bye-bye, Stimulus: Where Budget Cuts Threaten Growth Around the World.

Date: 2022

URL: https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2022-01-13/where-budget-cuts-to-government-aid-threaten-world-economic-growth-in-2022

Summary: The article explores the post-Covid pandemic government fund injections into the community. All governments fought the effects of the coronavirus through stimulus packages, which had ramifications, especially on the inflationary index. Bringing back the economic behavior and standards of the people is necessary. For the people's welfare first, nations need to get interest rates to normalcy and spur growth and production in tandem to demand at the grassroots.

Stories 2:

Title: People out of Poverty – New Report Looks at Lessons from China's Experience."

Date: 2022

URL: https://www.worldbank.org/en/news/press-release/2022/04/01/lifting-800-million-people-out-of-poverty-new-report-looks-at-lessons-from-china-s-experience

Summary: this World Bank report shows, through china's example, how people's lives could be better through conscious efforts and support. Poverty is a structural bias, and the disadvantaged cannot move ahead without help or by themselves. China has input to its population and public strategies have born fruits and remain as samples to the rest of the world. It is the strategy to uplift the country and the people.

Stories 3:

Title: Tracking the COVID-19 Economy's Effects on Food, Housing, and Employment Hardships.

Date: 2022.

URL: https://www.cbpp.org/research/poverty-and-inequality/tracking-the-covid-19-economys-effects-on-food-housing-and-employment.

Summary: Lack of jobs or loss of jobs is devastating to people and the economy. Jobless people become dependent and liability. They also become vulnerable to other problems, including malnutrition, diseases, and crime. Covid 19 pandemic caused a lot of misery to those who lost jobs. The government took responsibility and injected help, although not all people could reach that stimulus package.

The achievability of these goals is a challenging task. I would imagine a world order change to ensure that resources distribution is equitable in the current settings. I envision a more robust mechanism to compel wealthy nations against irrational and unsustainable exploitation of the environment to safeguard the welfare of the next generations. Given the force of world synergy, it is possible to reach all the goals.
