A walk through the Business section of any bookstore or a quick Internet search on the topic will reveal a seemingly endless supply of writings on leadership. Formal research literature is also teeming with volumes on the subject.
However, your own observation and experiences may suggest these theories are not always so easily found in practice. Not that the potential isn’t there; current evidence suggests that leadership factors such as emotional intelligence and transformational leadership behaviors, for example, can be highly effective for leading nurses and organizations.
Yet, how well are these theories put to practice? In this Discussion, you will examine formal leadership theories. You will compare these theories to behaviors you have observed firsthand and discuss their effectiveness in impacting your organization.
To Prepare:
Review the Resources and examine the leadership theories and behaviors introduced.
Identify two to three scholarly resources, in addition to this Module’s readings, that evaluate the impact of leadership behaviors in creating healthy work environments.
Reflect on the leadership behaviors presented in the three resources that you selected for review.
By Day 3 of Week 4
Post two key insights you had from the scholarly resources you selected. Describe a leader whom you have seen use such behaviors and skills, or a situation where you have seen these behaviors and skills used in practice. Be specific and provide examples. Then, explain to what extent these skills were effective and how their practice impacted the workplace.

Discussion: Leadership

The vast quantity of literature, both popular and academic, on the importance of leadership styles reflects a cognizance of the significance of leadership to organizational performance (Laureate Education, 2014). Empirical studies in the healthcare field have confirmed the correlation between particular leadership styles, such as transformational leadership, and the empowerment of those working under a transformational leader (Boahmah et al., 2017). Such empirical studies confirm that the gap between leadership theory and practice can be overcome. However, a well-founded leadership theory on one hand and actually implementing it on the other hand are two different dimensions of leadership studies, which is why strategies to execute evidence-based practice are of such significance (Duggan et al., 2015).

Accordingly, defining the qualities that make up a leadership behavior such as transformative leadership is only one part of the puzzle. In general, a transformational leader is someone who sets a standard which others may follow, motivates those who she leads, encourages employees to provide insight on problems, and exhibits a sensitivity and awareness to individual character traits of employees (Kolzow, 2014). Once the qualities of transformational leadership have been established, leaders can thereafter develop this leadership behavior by cultivating the required skills, such as being attune to the example they set for others, understanding how to motivate, encouraging the exchange of ideas and a democratic environment, and being aware of diversity of personalities (Broome & Marshall, 2021).

As a registered nurse that works in psychiatry, one of the key leaders in my work life is my Nurse Manager of the Behavioral Health Unit. Learning about the exact traits constituting a leadership behavior such as the transformational style has allowed me to reflect on our relationship from this perspective (Kolzow, 2014). My nursing manager satisfies the characteristics of a transformational leader. She sets a high standard of ethical behavior and commands the respect of her employees. Her style is never combative and rather encourages us to do our best. She is also always open to suggestions on how to address problems. While perhaps she could be more sensitive to the different personalities of the workplace, and tends to treat us more or less the same, from another perspective this could be viewed as fair and equal treatment of all, which itself generates respect from staff. It is encouraging to find verified in my own professional life that the theoretical qualities of effective leadership behavior are being practiced in my work environment (Kolzow, 2014).
