Media and Terrorism
The most brutal, severest, and shocking terror attack to ever exist in modern history is the destruction of the Twin Towers of the worldwide trade Centre in New York city by hijacking the civilians’ aeroplanes in 2001. The information was transmitted live through television and thus reached a high and a new media dimension and influence. Terrorism is no new concept or phenomenon, but the continuous involvement of the media has raised eyebrows in rethinking the role of media in the terrorism context. This is a discussion post that focuses on the role of media in terrorism.
By using the communications strategies to amplify the intended effects that may be resulting in terror, mass media provides the publicity that the terrorists need. For instance, the mass media may amplify the levels of public fear towards the intended terror attack or initiate a wrong perception and poor cohesion by destroying the public ties towards a terror attack. The wrong perception and view may therefore translate to massive terror effects within (Bielby, 2015). Therefore, there is a clear correlation between the media's need for sensational headlines and terrorism's desire for publicity.
Journalists may also be involved in radicalization due to their languages. It has to be put into consideration that not all media personalities are neutral. Therefore, some may trigger terrorism by using the wrong language and the mode in which they frame their reports. Failure to counterchecking the deliverance of the media reports can translate wrong information in a manner that can initiates prejudices and stereotypes (“Media and terrorism”, 2020). Additionally, some publications may also focus on a single aspect of terrorism. The reliance on a single side coincides with the subscription and the likes that fuel false public belief and promote terrorism within a given locality.
