Despite international criticism, Japan continues to hunt dolphins in an inhumane and brutal way. Japan is killing more dolphins each year with quotas set for how many they should kill. “The overall quota for the season allows for more than 1,700 animals to be killed or captured” (BBC News, 2019, p.2) Japan is creating quotas for how many dolphins should be slain for no reason almost as if it is a sport. With this many dolphins killed, it will surely effect the ocean environment by eliminating a predator group from the predator/prey ladder. Japan is killing dolphins for their meat even though it is unhealthy for consumption. “Demand for dolphin and whale meat has been on the decline over the past years and both have been found to have unhealthy levels of mercury” (BBC News, 2019, p. 342). Even though it is unhealthy and on the decline, dolphins are still being killed for their meat and some are even sold to marine parks for a much higher price. The use of dolphin meat and dolphins themselves pose a risk to humans and the enviroment. Article APA Citation: Taiji Cove hunt: Japan Starts controversial dolphin hunt. (2019, September 02).
