Chapter 6

Discussion Questions - 2

Suppose your city (or the nearest city housing an NBA franchise) is deciding where to build a new arena. Think of two or three possible sites and describe the pros and cons of each. Which site do you think is best?

Problems - 6.4

6.4 While football and baseball teams have gone from multipurpose to football-and baseball-only facilities, basketball and hockey teams continue to share arenas. Why?

Chapter 7

Discussion Questions - 1

Are the stadiums or arenas of your local sports franchises located downtown or on the edge of town? Do you think that is the best place for them?

Problems - 7.6 (change to Uber)

7.6 Your city is committed to raising $100 million for a new arena. The mayor suggests putting a tax on taxicab rides since out-of-towners disproportionately use taxicabs. Evaluate the wisdom of this policy decision.

Chapter 8

Problems - 8.2, 8.3 (why or why not)? 8.5, and 8.8

8.2 Why would a Super Bowl at Ford Field in Detroit have more of an impact on Detroit than a regular season Detroit Lions game that draws the same number of fans?

8.3 If you are the mayor of a city hosting the Super Bowl, do you want the hometown team to make it to the championship game?

8.5 If you had a choice, would you rather your city (or the nearest large city) host a major sports franchise or a mega-event such as the World Cup or Olympics? Why?

8.8 Every summer, a large number of the world’s sports economists meet for a conference in a major city in the western United States. If the schedule permits, the economists always try to go to a local sporting event, such as a MLB, MLS, or National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) game while they are there. Should the economists’ spending at these events count as economic impact for the city? Why or why not?

Solution

Discussion Question 2: Where to Build an Arena

Suppose my city is deciding where to build an arena, there are several possible sites, and each has its pros and cons. The first location is in the center of the city. It has easy access to public transportation and local businesses and restaurants. However, it is not close to any major highways or freeways, so it would be difficult for fans to get there by car.

The second location is close to an interstate that connects to other regional cities but is outside town. The downside is that this site is farther away from most local businesses and restaurants than the first site.

Problems - 6.4

Basketball and hockey teams still use shared arenas despite football and baseball teams switching from multipurpose to football and baseball-only facilities for several reasons: These sports are played indoors during most seasons; both require ice rinks and large indoor spaces, and both are popular throughout North America. In addition, because many cities have only one or two professional basketball or hockey teams, there is usually no issue with local fans being able to attend games at home arenas.

Chapter 7

Discussion Questions – 1

The local sports franchises in my hometown are located downtown, and I believe that is the best place for them. The stadiums and arenas of many professional and collegiate sports teams are typically located in the heart of a city’s downtown area. This is because they are often a significant point of pride for the community, bringing people together to celebrate their shared interests in sports. In addition, studies have shown that cities closer to their professional teams enjoy higher rates of civic engagement and lower crime rates (Bell, 2021). Additionally, when team owners decide where to locate their stadiums, they consider proximity to public transportation lines (which helps fans get to games).

Problems - 7.6 (Change To Uber)

If the city is committed to raising $100 million for a new arena, it is wise to put a tax on taxicab rides. The primary reason is that it will get the most money out of those who use taxicabs. In addition, out-of-towners are disproportionately likely to use taxicabs; therefore, this would be an effective way to raise funds from people who are likely to have more money than in-towners.

Chapter 8

Problems - 8.2, 8.3 (Why or Why Not)? 8.5, And 8.8

The Super Bowl at Ford Field in Detroit has a significant influence on the city compared to the Detroit Lions game; it pulls an equal volume of spectators during the regular season because it invites visitors from all over the world who want to see what makes Detroit such a unique place. As a result, hotels and restaurants will be full, increasing local businesses’ revenue.

If I were the mayor of a city hosting the Super Bowl, I would want the hometown team to make it to the championship game. Therefore, in my opinion, I believe that it is in the best interest of the city to host the Super Bowl for its home team to play in and win it (Hayduk 2022). The main reason for this is that it would significantly boost tourism and hospitality, in addition to creating a sense of pride among residents.

If given a choice between hosting a major sports franchise or a mega-event, I would choose to host the mega-event. Hosting a mega-event can affect the city’s economy, culture, and infrastructure. The city will be able to experience an influx of tourism and media attention that will enable it to grow economically, culturally, and socially.

The economists’ spending at sporting events does not count as an economic impact on local cities. This is because they are not directly spending their money in the city itself but instead on travel and food expenses they would incur regardless of where they were going.
