Solution
Emergency Preparedness
The Red Cross Organization’s website disaster preparedness section highlights the West (Pacific) region as susceptible to several natural disasters. This wide range of disasters was surprising because I often thought about California as at risk of earthquakes, wildfires, and tsunamis. However, the site enumerated volcanoes and landslides as additional risks (American Red Cross, n.d.). My level of readiness was average, as I expected. Nonetheless, I noticed that I was severely unprepared in terms of family and community awareness. Besides my safety practices gleaned from online forums and institutional training, I was ignorant of the requirements that personal readiness demanded regarding my family members and immediate community. I will address my readiness with my family by using online tools, such as drills and information from reliable authorities.
Online services have improved my emergency preparedness significantly. Therefore, I will utilize the same resources to increase my family’s readiness and share information with my community. The online space is a meeting point for people sharing common interests. There are several online communities where I can share information about emergency readiness, such as WhatsApp groups, Facebook pages, and discord forums. For my family preparedness, I will register them on the Shakeout Earthquake drill later this month, purchase emergency kits and safety equipment for volcanic eruptions. These tools will help us prepare for most of the natural disasters expected in our zone. Furthermore, I will encourage discussions about evacuation plans for different emergency scenarios and ensure all family members have the relevant information for each emergency scenario. Besides the online information-sharing activities, I will sensitize the community through casual talks with my friends and acquaintances to increase their awareness of the various tools that can help them prepare better for natural disasters.
