Option Two: Possible Relationships

Question

Choose one of the following to respond to:

Same-sex marriage is legal in a number of states, but various kinds of restrictions on same-sex marriage and its recognition exist in the other states. What anthropological questions can you identify about the meaning that such unions have for Americans in different parts of the country that help to explain the legislative patterns in each state? What can we say about these cultural expectations when all of these changes happened within less than a decade?

OR

Who would possibly be the “parents” and what kind of possible relationships would exist between those parents and a child in a birth in which an infertile couple used a sperm bank and the egg from the wife’s sister, a surrogate mother? What would change if the legal parents were killed in an auto accident and the child was adopted by the mother’s sister?

Solution

Option Two: Possible Relationships

In the case scenario, the baby’s parents would still be the infertile couple. In this case, the infertile couple cannot be able to get children on their own by conceiving. There are numerous legal ways for a couple like this to have a kid even though they are not the biological parents if they so choose. In this instance, the couple could have chosen to adopt a child or employ a surrogate, as was done in the sister's situation. However, the commitment of the sister to become a surrogate of their child indicates the agreement that can be binding in law only to be a carrier till the baby is born, upon which it becomes the infertile couple’s. On the side of the sperm donor, such indicates that the person who donated the male gametes did so without any expectation of claiming the baby; hence, the donation to the sperm bank. Therefore, neither the sister nor the sperm donor has the opportunity of claiming parents to the child. In this regard, the parents will have a normal relationship with the child. In most cases, the couple may not mention how the child was conceived but raise it as their own as parents. In case the child knows the process, the relationship may not change much because the value and commitment that the couple will instill in the child through the interactions will determine the decision of the child.

If the couple dies in an accident and the surrogate mother (the wife’s sister) takes up the child, the dead couple will remain to be recognized as the child’s parents. Despite having donated the egg and being the surrogate mother hence a biological relationship between the sister and the child, they are still the recognized parents. In this case, it will be the infertile couple that perished in the accident. If the sister wanted a child or not, it may be inferred from the mother-child bond. Considering the child is family, the sister would take of her as if it were her own despite the circumstances, including the child being born by her and partly the biological parent. The nature of their bond may alter, and the two may even grow closer, if the youngster learns the knowledge.
