Question

Read and Discuss Deborah Cameron's "What Language Barrier?" Deborah Tannen's work is no doubt useful, but Deborah Cameron takes on some of her notions and narratives about gender. After you complete your reading, write a thoughtful discussion about what you've learned. Consider the following questions:

On page 2, first full paragraph, Cameron states that “The idea that men and women ‘speak different languages’ has itself become a dogma… an unquestioned article of faith.” What does she mean by this? What do you think about that statement?

What are the myths of Mars and Venus according to Cameron?

Cameron notes on 4-5: “It is not hard to see how these tendencies might lead readers of Mars and Venus books to ‘recognise’ generalizations about the way men and women use language, provided those generalizations fit within already familiar stereotypes…In relation to men and women, our most basic stereotypical explanation is simply that they will be different rather than the same.” What do you think is significant about that?

Solution

 Anthropology

Women are typically portrayed as more cooperative, conversational, and pleasant than males, but this book by famous linguist Deborah Cameron, who has published extensively on the issue, dispels many assumptions. She focuses on linguistic interaction using daily interactions between boys and girls that depict the implicit bias in the society portrayed by communication barriers.

When one reside where the language you speak is not the predominant language, it might be challenging to avoid linguistic obstacles. When two individuals who speak different languages cannot converse with each other, a language barrier is developed. Stuttering, articulation dysfunction, and hearing loss are all instances of physical language difficulties. People who are regularly on the move or reside in an area with many ex-pats may have difficulty communicating. They may lead to misunderstandings and even conflict since many individuals are quickly angered or upset by them. Individuals' access to information is further limited by a lack of familiarity with the language they speak. Indeed, they significantly affect our lives, and getting rid of them might be challenging. However, the language barrier is one of the main obstacles most people confront now that the world is getting more globalized.

Gender obstacles to communication come from the diverse approaches. Gender norms, anticipated gender roles, and individual variations may result in major communication barriers. It is crucial to remember that bridging the gap does not always lie with one gender. Everyone, including the firm, needs to be a part of the discourse to achieve a significant difference.

Stereotypes are oversimplified beliefs about someone or something. They are preconceptions that hinder persons from thinking correctly, pushing them to rush to quick judgments. People of every gender and socioeconomic identity communicate differently. However, people may commonly establish their beliefs on a single interaction. For example, there is a stereotype where people assume that women have a tendency to speak softly. However, assertive women are often misconstrued as arrogance. Such gender obstacles express themselves in damaging ways and may impact workplace culture adversely.

Interactions using language disclose previously unseen meaning. A person's gender identity may play a role in the development of workplace gender barriers. For instance, people from varied genders communicate distinctly using facial expressions, gestures, and other nonverbal indicators. However, due to their gender, people have specific expectations about how they will behave. Gender expectations have a part in this. When it comes to a company's top male executives, for example, they must be excessively forceful, talk loudly, and walk firmly. Having high expectations may lead to individuals being bound to their jobs in society and being considered undesirable when they don't satisfy them.

Individuals can use communication to break down gender boundaries. In the same way that people are responsible for eliminating gender stereotypes and societal expectations, companies must do their share. For firms to break down gender barriers in the workplace, they need to create regulations that hold everyone accountable. Everyone should be allowed to participate in the employment process and networking activities. Workers come from diverse walks of life. Therefore they won't all be able to connect to the same things. Because of this, we must educate them and help them unlearn inaccurate knowledge and habits.

In summation, it is hard to make broad judgments about men or women since there is too much diversity and overlap within and across groups to do so. Nothing could be farther from the truth! Multidisciplinary techniques that consider human biological and psychological requirements and traits may be more productive. Different disciplines that utilize language to analyze their data should be able to cross-pollinate more readily.
