We value diverse perspectives and the ability to have respectful dialogue about difficult issues. Share a time when you had a conversation with a person or a group of people about a difficult topic. What insight did you gain, and how would you incorporate that knowledge into your thinking in the future?

Here’s some background information for the essay:

I had a meeting with my mother’s psychiatrist about the difficult topic of my mom’s bipolar I disorder diagnosis.

I gained insight on how to treat and handle my mother during her manic phases. (Please provide examples for this)

I gained insight on how to treat and handle my mother during her depressive phases. (Please provide examples for this)

My mother had tardive dyskinesia as a result of a side effect of one of her medications. This caused her to struggle with coherency and physical movement. I helped her with her mobility. For example, getting her up the stairs and into bed.

Solution

Helping Someone with Bipolar I Disorder

After holding a meeting with my mother’s psychiatrist about bipolar, I disorder diagnosis. I found that dealing with bipolar I am not easy, and in fact, it needs a guide that can make you navigate challenges and support my mother through the issue. Also, during my visit to the doctor, I was able to know the symptoms related to bipolar I disorder, such as elevated moods and abnormal behavior. In addition, my meeting with a psychiatrist enables me to gain some vital ideas on how to treat and handle the manic phases. For instance, a manic phase has a lot of reckless antics, explosive outbursts and irresponsible decisions. I will handle my mother with love and caring for such a case, encouraging her that everything will be okay. Taking care of all symptoms through acceptance of the situation will make them remain positive.

In addition, anyone who has Bipolar I disorder has had at least one manic episode in life. Thus, there’s a need to regulate it through treatment and make an individual with the disorder feel loved and know how to stabilize. Consequently, I learned that people with Bipolar I experience a full episode of mania that elevates their moods, thus leading to serious disruption in life. Having learned that living with bipolar I am not an easy task, I will take the initiative of making sure that during depressive phases, my mother is safe. I will make her reduce stress as a form of treatment by always making her happy and understanding in case of a mood shift. Understanding what she is going through and offering support will make a big difference in how the person will feel. I think going in the future; I would make sure that I love individuals with bipolar I disorder to make them remain positive in life. Also, the knowledge I have acquired will help me be prepared for destructive behaviors of the individual when mania or depression.
