Spirituality refers to the act of having concernment over the human soul as opposed to physical and material things. It involves recognizing a feeling or a belief that there is an existence of something greater than any human. It is an extensive concept over something far off from self. Spirituality may involve traditions based on religion and beliefs that are holistic in how an individual connects to others (Hawthorne et al.,2020). It offers direction towards what is morally right and wrong and that there is something substantial connecting human beings and to the universe.
The concept of spirituality has influenced the way nurses offer care to patients in many ways, both positively and negatively. In most cases, patients admitted to hospitals usually look up to nurses to cater to their emotional, spiritual, and physical needs. However, nurses satisfy these needs by showing sympathy to patients and their families, being there for them, ensuring freedom for patients to express their beliefs and values, and communicating with them effectively. It helps in offering the best quality of life for patients. Spirituality makes nurses form a valuable part of total patient care and promotes their overall wellbeing (Phillips et al.,2018).
My conception of spirituality also influences the way patients are cared for since it creates ethical dilemmas in practice. For example, ending the life of a patient experiencing significant pain and suffering and no medical treatment can resolve the illness, also, in procedures done on pregnant women with complications where there is a need to terminate the life of the unborn baby to save the mother’s life (Murgia et al.,2020). These moral questions are challenging and contradict spirituality and how the patient should be cared for.
