Dr. Stuart Brown's opinions on humor, games, roughhousing, flirtation and fantasy surprised me in this TedTalk about play. When I found out about this TED, his arguments about plays sounded like a few volumes are often translated into several languages. I could use this TED video as part of my classroom training because of its emphasis on public speaking and presentation skills as a critical result of play.
In the elementary school classroom, participating in play helps raise the future generations of citizens. When participating in higher-level Vygotskian play, children follow rules that guide the creation of imaginary scenarios and the portrayal of roles. Because they are grounded in reality, these rules help toddlers develop self-regulation skills through play, such as patience and impulse control. Playing role-playing games as a child is a good predictor of how well they interact with others in the real world. This effort can help not just students but also the entire population. For example, for the sake of authenticity, children should not be allowed to utilize the instruments of the medical profession when they are pretending to be patients at a doctor's office. Only this gadget or toy can be used by a youngster pretending to be a doctor. It must be monitored at all times. Because of a lack of support for play in early childhood programs, classrooms are no longer filled with mature, high-quality play scenarios; instead, pre-schoolers' play has degenerated to the level commonly observed in toddlers. Young children would be unable to play peacefully and self-regulate in kindergarten if this trend continues.
My favorite way to play as a child included painting, drawing, playing Minecraft, and using Toca Boca programs. Toca's hometowns included Toca City and the Band. These games were dear to my heart.
